Dr. Burkett has extensive experience in all aspects of aviculture.

He began breeding birds in 1979, starting with a few budgies and cockatiels at the hobby level. Over the next 20 years Dr. Burkett successfully bred over 40 different species of Psittacines.

In 1992, he and his wife opened a bird specialty shop, The Birdie Boutique, which is still operating successfully today. Through The Birdie Boutique, he has developed many handfeeding techniques, bird care philosophies, and nursery management protocols that make his store one of the best in the country. In fact, The Birdie Boutique was voted Best Specialty Store by Pet Product News in 1995.

In addition to their retail store, Dr. Burkett and his wife opened a distribution business in 1995 and have grown it into a successful company by selling pet bird supplies to other pet stores, bird shops, and internet e-commerce stores. Diamond Avian Distributors, Inc. carries over 4000 different bird care products and supplies, such as cages, food, and toys, and delivers to more than 15 different states on the east coast from Maine to Georgia.

Even before high school, Dr. Burkett's intent was to attend veterinary college and practice avian medicine and surgery. He focused on his goal and graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993. He opened his avian private practice immediately upon graduating.

Today he is owns and operates a successful avian practice in Durham, NC, which treats only birds, including wildlife, chickens, ducks, and all other avian species.

In November 2002, Dr. Burkett became one of the first 100 veterinarians in the country to be Board Certified in avian medicine.

In 2004, he was appointed an adjunct professorship for the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and teaches students rotating through his practice.

Currently he is the Chair for the Avian Welfare Committee and serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
